SUMMARY:Applying Motivational Interviewing Strategies in Substance Use Prevention Practices\, Programs\, and Services
DESCRIPTION:Enhancing Prevention Efforts: Prevention Application Community of Practice\n\n\n\nRegister Now\n\n\n\nOverview:\n\n\n\nPrevention Application Community of Practice spaces support the continuing education of prevention professionals in a manner that is engaging\, focused on skill building\, dynamic\, and in line with statewide goals. Together we “unpack” what has been learned in professional competency training events\, thus supporting the application of skills and development of sector partnerships and networking. Prevention Application spaces are intended to be a collective learning space with reflection opportunities for participants. \n\n\n\nNovember Topic\n\n\n\nMotivational Interviewing (MI) isn’t just for intervention or treatment; it’s a powerful tool for prevention professionals\, too. In this interactive session\, we’ll explore how MI strategies can support prevention efforts through effective engagement\, early identification\, and appropriate referral practices. Aligned with CSAP’s Problem Identification and Referral strategy\, participants will learn how to use MI-informed techniques to support youth and families in recognizing risk\, building readiness for change\, and strengthening protective factors. Through practice-based learning\, we’ll explore how MI principles such as\, empathy\, collaboration\, and evoking change talk can enhance conversations in schools\, coalitions\, and community settings. Whether you’re new to MI or brushing up\, this session will help you integrate MI into your prevention toolbox with confidence and cultural responsiveness.  \n\n\n\nAbout the Presenter\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKristin Dempsey (she/her)\, EdD\, LMFT\, LPCC is a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) and professional clinical counselor (LPCC).
