Community Spotlight: Success Stories Across California
March 30 @ 11:00 am – 12:30 pm
Overview
ABHPC is excited to celebrate the amazing work and stories coming from prevention programs across California! This panel session will highlight stories of prevention success and share real-world applications of prevention practices. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions of the panelists and explore solutions for barriers within their own programs.
Dr. James B. Golden: Through Tarzana Treatment Center College’s X-Roads Initiative at Lancaster State Prison, we trained incarcerated individuals to become certified Peer Support Specialists, creating a pathway into behavioral health careers while strengthening substance use prevention and recovery support in the communities they return to. The program helps transform lived experience into leadership and expands California’s prevention workforce.
Sandy Logan: During the COVID pandemic, the Multi-Unit Smoke Free Housing Initiative in San Fernando worked with community partners and residents to gather stories about secondhand smoke in homes. Together, our coalition created video messages to share these concerns and show the community’s support for smoke-free buildings.
Gabe Teran: Middle school students in Oxnard, California, raised concerns about alcohol and tobacco shops in their neighborhood. Using a strategic prevention framework, they looked at an approach using environmental prevention practices to address the issue – and gained significant knowledge and skills in the process!
