Ethics in Substance Use Prevention Part 2

As a substance use disorder (SUD) prevention professional, ethical situations arise involving service recipients, colleagues, external professionals, and stakeholders/rightsholders. This training will present ethical standards and an ethics decision-making process based on an accepted code of conduct developed specifically for the SUD prevention field. The training will examine each of the six principles identified in the Prevention Think Tank Code of Ethical Conduct, as well as present a four-step decision making process that will assist the prevention professional in coming to an ethical solution.
The recommended skill level for Ethics in Substance Use Prevention is for intermediate prevention professionals.
This 2-part training meets the 7-hour credentialing requirements for the California Certified Prevention Specialist under the California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Professionals. Participants are required to attend the full training in order to receive continuing education units through ABHPC.
Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for this ABHPC training are offered by the Center for Applied Research Solutions (CARS) at no cost to you. Information about how to request no-cost CEUs will be provided during the training. Participants are required to attend the full training in order to receive CEUs through ABHPC.
About the Presenters
Elizabeth Cayden (she/her) entered the prevention field in 2014 as a National Fellow within the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) workforce development program. Following the completion of her graduate degree and fellowship at the National Association for Substance Abuse and Drug Abuse Directors (NASADAD) in Washington, DC, Lizzie relocated to the west coast with the goal of continuing in the prevention field. A trained epidemiologist and public health subject matter expert, Lizzie has supported substance use prevention and suicide prevention services for counties, statewide and national systems, coalitions, Tribal communities, community-based organizations, and local prevention grantees. She currently lives in Washington State, where she advocates for systemic improvements to the behavioral healthcare system, supports LGBTQ+ community-based efforts, and addresses the stigma encountered by those with lived experience. Lizzie is currently serving as the Project Director for the Advance Behavioral Health Prevention California (ABHPC) statewide training and technical assistance program.
Olivia Shrago, M.S.W. provides management oversight for the ABHPC program with a focus on Prevention Pathways, which aims to develop and retain the prevention workforce. Olivia received her Master’s in Social Work from the University at Buffalo in New York, where she began her prevention work on the university’s sexual violence prevention team. Since then, Olivia has worked with government-funded suicide and mental health prevention programs across a variety of settings, including middle and high schools, the United States Air Force, and Black churches. Olivia has experience with project management, training design and implementation, and supporting prevention research.
