Networking for the Prevention Professional: Creating and Sustaining Public Health Sector Partnerships

ABHPC hosts monthly online Prevention Pathways Community of Practice. These interactive sessions will provide participants with an opportunity to learn, build skills for successful prevention efforts, and network with other prevention professionals. Discussions will be centered around best practices in prevention, emerging and empirical research, and evidence-based programs. Each session will be led by an experienced consultant with expert knowledge on the topic and will include ample time for participant engagement and interaction.

State and local public health sectors are a major player across many of the goals of Healthy People 2030. By developing and leveraging partnerships with public health organizations, we can establish successful, wide-spread prevention programming in communities.
In this session, Networking for the Prevention Professional: Creating and Sustaining Public Health Sector Partnerships, participants will learn how to identify key contacts at public health sectors, build effective relationships, and co-create evidence-based prevention initiatives alongside public health entities. Participants will have the opportunity to share the barriers and successes of working with the public health sector and brainstorm alongside other attendees and our subject matter experts.
Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are not eligible for Prevention Applications Community of Practice sessions.
About the Presenters

Nicole Valenzuela (she/her) is a licensed social worker deeply committed to community-centered care, emphasizing upstream prevention and advocacy to create lasting positive impact. Her work transcends substance use prevention, adopting a holistic approach to foster well-being across diverse communities. By applying data-driven strategies like the Strategic Prevention Framework, Protective Factors, and trauma-informed practices, Nicole aims to cultivate inclusive, equitable, and resilient environments where all individuals can thrive.
Central to Nicole’s work is building strong, trusting relationships with community members, partners, and stakeholders, ensuring that programs are developed are tailored with and for the community to be served. Her expertise spans program planning, program evaluation, needs assessment, and multi-sector collaboration, enabling her to lead initiatives that generate sustainable, long-term change.
Nicole is also dedicated to fostering the growth of future advocates and prevention professionals. She offers technical assistance, training, and resources, empowering others to advance their knowledge and skills in prevention work. Guided by empathy, effective communication, and deep compassion, Nicole’s approach ensures that individuals and communities alike are equipped not just to overcome their challenges, but to flourish in environments designed for their success. She is passionate about driving meaningful, equitable change that uplifts our communities.

Sandy Logan (she/her) is a seasoned Certified Prevention Specialist who has been working in the prevention field for over a decade. Her extensive experience in public policy, public health, social marketing, media advocacy, health education, community capacity/power building, and leadership development has equipped her with a wealth of knowledge and skills, which she has put to good use in her work as a prevention specialist. Sandy has worked closely with various communities to develop comprehensive strategies that build capacity and address the underlying causes of community drug problems.
In her role as a prevention specialist, Sandy has been leading local efforts aimed at addressing prescription drug abuse/misuse. Specifically, she has been instrumental in establishing a broad base of community support that includes law enforcement, pharmacies, pharmacy students, convenience stores, schools, medical professionals, and community-based organizations. Sandy’s efforts have culminated in the development of public education campaigns, as well as the implementation of innovative prevention efforts, such as increasing the number of safe disposal sites, all aimed at addressing substance abuse.
